Why Cheap R1,950 Websites Cost More in the Long Run

10 July 2026 · 8 min read

You've seen the ads. 'Complete business website — R1,950!' On Facebook, on Gumtree, on flyers stapled to a lamppost near a taxi rank. And the maths seems obvious: R1,950 for a website versus R6,500 or more. Why on earth would you pay three times as much?

The honest answer, having rebuilt dozens of them, is that the R1,950 website almost always costs the business more — usually significantly more — within eighteen months. Here's how the maths actually plays out.

What R1,950 actually buys

For R1,950, a designer working full-time cannot build you a custom website. It's not a matter of skill — it's a matter of hours. At even a low rate of R400/hour, R1,950 buys about five hours of work. Five hours is not enough to design a website. It's barely enough to install a template, drop in your text, and press publish.

So what you get is almost universally a pre-built template with your logo, your phone number, and about four paragraphs of text swapped in. The design isn't yours — it's shared with dozens or hundreds of other businesses using the same template.

The four hidden costs

1. Zero enquiries from Google search

R1,950 sites almost never rank in Google. There's no time budget for keyword research, no service-plus-location page structure, no schema markup, and often no Google Business Profile setup. The result: your customers don't find you unless they already know your name.

The cost: every enquiry you would have received from a Google search but didn't. For a trades business quoting R2,500 average jobs, one lost enquiry per month is R30,000 of missed revenue per year.

2. Hosting held hostage

The freelancer typically hosts the site on their own account so they can build it fast. When you want to leave, or when they raise their hosting fee, or when they simply disappear, you can't easily take the site with you. We regularly meet business owners who don't have the login to their own domain.

The cost: a rebuild plus a domain recovery process. Usually R1,500–R3,000 in wasted admin, sometimes more.

3. The support cliff

At R1,950 the freelancer cannot afford to support you afterwards — the maths simply doesn't work. So the first content change is often either ignored or billed at R500–R800 per hour with a two-hour minimum. Six changes a year is R3,000–R10,000 in unplanned annual costs.

4. The rebuild bill

The average lifespan of a R1,950 website in our experience is 14 months. After that it looks dated, breaks on newer phones, has security warnings in Chrome, or the freelancer has vanished. You end up paying for the proper website you should have built the first time — plus the R1,950 you already spent, plus the customers you lost in between.

The real three-year total

For a typical Cape Town small business, a R1,950 website over three years usually looks something like this:

Compared to a R6,500 Launch website with a R750/month Care plan (R6,500 + R27,000 = R33,500 over three years) that actually brings in enquiries, the 'cheap' option isn't cheap at all — it's just more painful to notice.

When cheap makes sense

There are genuine cases for a very cheap site: a one-off event landing page, a hobby project, a placeholder while you decide what to build properly. If that's you, R1,950 is fine — nobody's expecting a return on it.

The problem is when someone treats a R1,950 build as their business's actual web presence. That's the version that quietly loses money every month while looking, on the surface, like a smart cost-saving decision.

How to think about it instead

A website isn't an expense in the same category as printing business cards. It's closer to hiring a very cheap salesperson who works 24/7 for R500 a month. The right question isn't 'how cheaply can I get one'. It's 'what's the smallest investment that gets me a website good enough to bring in real enquiries'. For most Cape Town small businesses, that number in 2026 is somewhere between R6,500 and R11,500.

Which is uncomfortable to hear if you've just budgeted R2,000 — but far less uncomfortable than realising it eighteen months in.
