Web Design Cape Town vs Johannesburg — Why the Price Gap?

15 October 2026 · 6 min read

Cape Town is the most expensive place in South Africa to have a website built. That's not an impression — it shows up whenever anyone tabulates published agency pricing.

The numbers

A survey of published rate cards across more than fifty South African web design companies put the national average for a five-page website at around R6,254.

Broken down by city, Cape Town averaged roughly R9,441 for the same five pages, against about R7,607 in Johannesburg. More recent figures push the Cape Town average higher still, closer to R11,561.

The spread within Cape Town is enormous — from under R1,000 to over R40,000 for nominally the same deliverable. That range tells you more than the average does.

Why the gap exists

Premises and salaries. Agencies in the City Bowl, Woodstock and the Waterfront carry higher rent than equivalents in Gauteng, and that lands in the hourly rate.

Client mix. Cape Town's economy skews toward tourism, hospitality, wine, property and lifestyle brands — sectors that care about design and are used to paying for it. Agencies calibrate to their market.

Agency density and positioning. A crowded market pushes agencies to differentiate upward rather than compete on price, because competing on price against fifty others is a losing game.

Out-of-town agencies market against it. Several Gauteng firms now pitch Cape Town businesses directly on the premium, promising the same work for less.

Does paying more get you more?

Sometimes. Price mostly tracks four things, none of which are geographic.

Scope — five pages or twelve. Custom versus template — a bespoke design costs several times an adapted theme. Copywriting — whether words are included or you're writing them at midnight. Integrations — payment gateways, booking systems and stock feeds add real hours.

A R20,000 quote and a R6,000 quote often differ on those four points, not on quality. Which means the useful question isn't "why is this more expensive", it's "what is in this one that isn't in that one".

How to compare quotes properly

Put them side by side and check: number of pages, who writes the content, custom design or template, revision rounds, timeline, what's excluded, monthly costs afterwards, and who owns the finished site.

Do that and the cheapest quote frequently stops being the cheapest.
