How to Get Your Business on Google Maps in Cape Town

6 August 2026 · 8 min read

For most local businesses in Cape Town, the Google Business Profile is worth more than the website. It's what puts you in the map results when somebody searches "physio Claremont" — and it's free.

Setting it up

Create the profile. Search for your business name on Google first. If a profile already exists that you didn't create, claim it rather than making a duplicate. Duplicates suppress each other.

Verify it. Google will ask for verification by video, phone or postcard. Postcard verification to a South African address takes one to three weeks, so start this before anything else. Nothing you do counts until you're verified.

Set your primary category carefully. This is the highest-impact field on the whole profile. "Plumber" and "Plumbing supply store" produce completely different results. Pick the one that matches what people search, then add secondary categories.

Set your service areas. If you travel to clients, list suburbs rather than a radius. Be honest — listing all of Cape Town when you work the Southern Suburbs dilutes your relevance everywhere.

Filling it out properly

Add your real hours, including public holidays. Add your website. Add your WhatsApp number if that's how you prefer to be contacted.

Photos matter more than people expect. Add genuine ones — completed work, your vehicle, your premises, your team. Ten real photos beat two stock images. Keep adding them.

Write the business description in plain language, mentioning what you do and the areas you serve. Do not stuff it with keywords.

Getting it to rank

Google weighs three things for local results: how close you are to the searcher, how relevant your profile is to what they typed, and how prominent your business appears across the web.

You can't change proximity. You control the other two.

Relevance comes from categories, services, description and the content on your website. A website with a page about the specific service and suburb strengthens the profile it links to.

Prominence comes largely from reviews and consistency. Reviews are the single biggest lever available to a small business. Ask every satisfied customer, make it easy by sending the direct review link, and reply to every review you get — including the bad ones, calmly.

Consistency means your business name, address and phone number appearing identically everywhere online. List on Brabys, Snupit and Hellopeter, and make sure the details match your profile exactly, down to the abbreviations.

How long it takes

Verified and fully completed profiles typically start appearing in map results within 30 to 60 days. Competitive categories in dense areas like the City Bowl or Claremont take longer than quieter suburbs. Reviews accelerate everything.

Keep it alive

Post updates monthly. Answer the questions section yourself before someone else answers wrongly. Update hours before holidays. Dormant profiles slide.
